Joe Anderson Civil War Field Trip

Joe Anderson, Department of Humanities, recognizes the importance of interactive learning and the power of place in the study of history. In the spring of 2012, he shared that vision with twenty Mount Royal students on a field school on the American Civil War in the eastern United States.

Anderson explains that "the battlefields and museums became the classroom." Students also visited plantations and monuments to see events from the perspective of those who lived them, to appreciate the connections between battlefront and home front, and to understand the ways in which the meanings of those events changed over time.

Anderson hopes to conduct another field school in the next few years. For more information about current field school opportunites, please visit our International Education web page.
